چکیده

Developmental mechanisms are usually assumed to evolve by natural selection of the morphological traits they produce. Therefore, information on phenotypic traits is an important component of comparative studies of development. Morphometrics permits the rigorous quantitative analysis of variation in organismal size and shape, and is increasingly being used in developmental contexts. The new methods of morphometrics combine a geometric concept of shape with the procedures of multivariate statistics, and constitute a powerful and flexible set of tools for analyzing morphological variation. This paper briefly reviews these methods and provides examples of their application in studies of genetic variation and developmental modularity. The results of morphometric analyses can be readily interpreted in relation to the geometry and anatomical structure of the parts under study. Genetic studies of shape in the mouse mandible found two recurrent patterns in environmental and genetic variation from different origins, suggesting that the development system ‘channels’ the phenotypic expression of variation in similar ways. Moreover, by analyzing the correlations of left-right asymmetries of morphometric traits, it is possible to delimit the spatial extent of developmental modules. These methods complement the experimental approaches of developmental biology and genetics, and can be expected to be especially fruitful in combination with them. q 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The presence of long-range correlations and/or mosaicism in DNA sequences results in GC fluctuations, even within individual isochores that are much larger than expected correlation-free ‘random’ sequences. Neglecting the presence of such fluctuations can lead to incorrect conclusions regarding relative homogeneity or isochore borders. In this commentary, we address these and other methodologic...

Many chloroplast genes of cyanobacterial origin have been transferred to the nucleus during evolution and their products are re-addressed to chloroplasts. The RPL21 gene encoding the plastid r-protein L21 has been lost in higher plant chloroplast genomes after the divergence from bryophytes. Based on phylogenetic analysis and intron conservation, we now provide evidence that in Arabidopsis a nu...

Yeast and bovine cytochrome c oxidases (COX) are composed of 12 and 13 different polypeptides, respectively. In both cases, the three subunits constituting the catalytic core are encoded by mitochondrial DNA. The other subunits are all products of nuclear genes that are translated on cytoplasmic ribosomes and imported through different transport routes into mitochondria. Biogenesis of the funct...

Cardiac and neuronal G protein-gated potassium (KG) channels are activated by neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, opioids, and dopamine. KG channel activation leads to an inhibition of synaptic transmission. KG channels are tetrameric complexes formed by assembly of G protein-gated, inwardly-rectifying potassium (K) channel (GIRK) subunits. Four mammalian GIRK subunits (GIRK1–4) have been ...

SET-domain (SET: Su(var)3-9, E(z) and Trithorax)-containing proteins were collected through sequence searches of the available databases. After removing redundancies, the proteins belonging to three families, SU(VAR)3-9, E(Z) and TRITHORAX, were selected. Analysis of the relationship between the different members is based on pairwise alignment, compilation, and comparison of their SETdomains. T...
